What car would you buy for 8.5K?

Sorry for asking as its about the 40th "What shall i buy for X amount" post this month

Anyway... It's not for me its for Elle my G.f, she is selling her VW Beetle and if she gets 4K for it then she will have 8.5K to spend on a car.

She wants Polo / Megane size car... Roughly the same engine 1.6, But would stretch? She Likes the Megane / Focus ST ( On autotrader website 8.1K) and the type r. But she wants more choice.

Focus ST's aint bad cars, not lightning quick but nice to drive and decent handling.
