Skid pan's great, did one at Rockingham.
I reckon it should be part of the driving test

got to agree with you there. we all know that without ABS with shoudl pump the footbrake to stop but until you try it you realise how the car reacts when you dont.
we had a set of cones laid out, very much like you would set out as a mock up garage,a channel to drive down with an escape gap at the end. we drove at full pelt towards the wall of cones and waited for the instructor to shout stop.
we then had to brake, slow, and then come off and serve to the right (othersid eof teh road) and then back again, simulating a child running out in front of us.
its a safety course yes, but a hell of a laugh driving a automatic A4 (whoohoo kick down!) not my fuel or tyres!

I did a wet skid pan course in Lichfield - it was excellent - very informative and I did it 3 weeks after my test; Its saved me from mishap on several occasions and I agree it should be part of the driving test
I did the rally course at Silverstone Rally School - that was well worth it as well - was in mark2 escorts; brilliant day and the same again you learn so much more about the response of a car when you take it off road and push them
