I put out my brown wheelie bin this morning for collection. My Dad mentioned the council are going to put chips on bins for some reason.

I had a look and found one of these under the front lip. It's the world Tag one: -

It reads the code from the transponder and then weighs the bin in the back of the truck.

Strange thing is though, this was off my brown bin, which is garden waste for composting

no it doesnt. basically the "chip" tells the sensor on the truck which bin is uplifted and when. so when the data is transffered to a pc it shows which bins have been emptied.

and thats it, the info isnt even really used. its just that on the old bins there was a number and now theres a chip with the the numbers. modern technology and all that

Ah right. I got the weighing bit from the article above.

So would this have been there since the bin was new?

I've been in the house 2 1/2 years, and never had a new bin. Must be quite old.

Unless the transponder fairy came round

we had one in our main bin, took it out as soon as we got it. No blue lights buzzing round yet

It does weigh the rubbish and stores the data, chip is used to identify the bin. My sisters brown bin got refused to be taken as it was too heavy...all it had in was damp grass cuttings.

it tells the lorries when the bin is off the ground, which in turn then weights the shoot your throwing away, apparently a new tax might be brought in for people who throw loads of shite out. Rip them off.

Mickey take. A usual, spending money on things that we don't need. And then charge extra for what we do.

exactly. They'll mainly be used for when they bring in charges for those who dont recycle enough and are throwing too much away in the normal bins.

Britain doesn't recycle much compared to other countries. Garden waste and glass. That's all that is recycled from my waste. That's all the council ask for.

Which, in turn, will lead to people using other people's bins (how exactly would you stop this, anyway, apart from padlocking the bin-lid?), and/or an increase in fly-tipping...

And will council-tax come down, if people are going to be "taxed" for the amount of rubbish they throw away? Highly unlikely...

we have bought our own seperate big bins for glass, plastic and paper and recycle everything.

Yet when we rang up the council as we needed another normal bin they refused to give us one as said we had to recycle more. Made them come out and see how much we are doing and they still refused to give us one as not 6 adults in the house...ridiculous! If they are only going to collect rubbish every 2 weeks now they have to give more bins out
