What's the projected life-expectancy of an Xe Engine?
Bought a Calibra with 124k on it with a completley standard XE in it. It's one of the late dis-pack engines in it. Bought the car with a knackered ECU and replaced it with a new ECU i got for £40. It starts ok now, but the exhaust has been cut off just past the manifold, so i don't run it for long!
Sounds a bit tappy up top, but it hasn't been run for about 6 months and i only ran it for about 2 minutes. Oil looks clean, and i looked for smoke under the car on startup and couldn't see much. What are the chances of it ruining another ECU?
Strange questions, but i'm just wondering!

probably will be fine with that ecu, unless water was getting in it it wont break again (probably)
its high milage but it really depends on how well its been looked after. some of the best engines I have seen have been high milers. 125k on a well looked after engine wouldnt worry me too much.

My mates XE nova gets kaned every day and that's on similar mileage. There's one that drives around that is like a smoke machine though!
I'm hoping the tapping would be because it hasn't been run for a while. Oil was clean and the coolant is blue though, so i thought that was a good sign.

stick an exhaust on it and check compression.
p.s most xe engines that get sold as having done 89k are really 125k+ engines anyway

Going on the BMW F1 Team principle. If it hasn't broken yet it's not going to break at all. The only thing to worry about is the parts that wear. It might start burning a bit of oil one day. The timing belt might need doing soon and it will probably be a bit tappy.

It will have a timing belt/water pump before it goes near my car! All my engines do. The 1.2 is booked in for it's second.
Biggest hurdle is insurance... Can 19 year olds with 2 YNCB get it?

should be fine. 124k is not alot. Lets say the car you got the engine from is 13 years old. late 1993.
average miles is 12000 a year x 13 thats 156000 - so its fine.
Do a service on it, change the belts, rollers and tensioners and away ya go.
If it does break its no big hassle to take the engine out and replace the bits.
Experience has taught me this, as well as costing me a fortune. LOL
