ok, setting my lass's wireless network up in her house

someone has already set the router up and it works with her flat mate's laptop wirelessly

i added her MAC address's (one for lan card, one for wifi) to the list that is allowed access to the network and assigned each an IP address 192.168.1.3 for use with the rj45 cable and 192.168.1.4 for the wifi

it finds the network, connects, but will not pick up the ip address over wifi. ipconfig says that the gateway and subnet mask are missing or wrong. tried to assign these manually and it still does not work.

when i enter the MAC address of the lan card it sayd "Donnas Laptop" as the hostname on the router. when I entre the MAC address of the wifi it remains blank. it connects to any other wireless network without any problems.

any ideas pleasssssssse and she'll post a pic of her naked lol

Have you tried letting them get everything via dhcp?

1. Disconnect the Modem from computer if it is connected and make sure the modem is connected to WAN/Internet port of the router and the computer to Port Number 1 of the router.

2. Make sure the router is ON. Hard Reset the router to factory defaults.

Make sure the router is switched ON.
Locate the reset button(inside a hole) at the back of the router.
Use a paper clip, push the reset button and hold it for 30 seconds then release the reset button.

3. Power OFF both your modem and the router.

4. Power ON your modem first and wait for 30 seconds.

5. Power ON your Router next and wait for another 30 seconds.

Check if we are able to go online in your computer. If not please follow the steps further.

6. Connect your main PC to the router using a cable

Make sure your computer has valid IP address by following the steps below.

Click on Start -> Run -> and type CMD and click OK.
Type IPCONFIG in black window and check the IP address.
It should be 192.168.2.x where x ranges from 2 to 200.

7. Open the Router setup page by typing http://192.168.2.1 in the address bar of the browser.

8. On the left under Internet WAN, click on Connection type.

9. Select Dynamic and click on Next and leave the host name blank and click on Apply changes button at the bottom.

10. Click on Change WAN MAC Address option and click on the CLONE button and click on Apply changes button at the bottom.

11. Just follow the steps 3, 4 and 5 and you should be able to go online.

same thing i mailed sometime back to a friend and worked great

assuming it's a Belkin router

Am I confused somewhere abdus?

Is what you described not for services that lock the internet connection to a certain mac address?

actually, i was having the same problem when I moved house. i thought the problem might have been NTL, made several restarts, both router and modem, in vain

Contacted Belkin customer services and they gave an almost similiar explanation

i was confused too at that time, but it has always worked since

i thought the same as you are thinking now...

but better rest in confusion

Very strange

Interested to see if that works because i'd never have thought of doing that unless it was for somebody like ntl who had the mac address locked.

tried dhcp on the laptop settings......

do you not have to assign the IP address from the router settings? (lists them in numerical order) or can you have them automatically pick one up?

If dhcp is turned on on the router it will assign all the ip's the laptop needs.

If somebody has set it up to allow mac addresses they might very well have turned dhcp off.

1st time it was set up dynamic did not work, needs to be PPPA (or somwthing that sounds like this lol) and needs a username ADSL01142254675 and the password (which she can not remember)

She will ring them up tomorrow for it and internet should work.
