bought set of 6x9's, 40w rms 80w peak...

sound a LOT better than old back speakers!

i have standard front speakers...
& a sandard saxo cd player

which would be the best option for quality and loudness gain:

to amp (if so how much)

or to upgrade headunits (if so any specific model for around £50)

bearing in mind in about a month i plan to get quite a good well.. good for an ameuteur sub

A £50 headunit wont give you much gain in loudness or quality TBH You need to be looking around 100 or more before you notice anything different.

Amping a set of 40w rms speakers isnt worth it for the trouble of all the wires and stuff that goes with having an amp. If your on about getting a sub you could get a 4 channel amp, bridge channels 1 and 2 for your sub, then turn down the gain on 3 and 4 and use those channels for your speakers
