Ok im quite keen to continue the debate on the value of modded cars, but to not make it look like im singling martin out and to stop his thread getting ruined further iv made a thread of its little own.
My question directed at all ppl not just martin, do you think that if you replace high quality standard body parts more for a £20 bit of fibreglass that your car is worth more? if so why?
Every month i see in autotrader examples of rover 214s up for 8k because they are covered in fibreglass, i also see corsa 1.2's in the sports car section because they have a combat kit 
Also another question, i have seen people thinking a pretty much standard car somehow magically is worth more than top book price because of its condition, im interested to know why their cars do not simply fall into the a1 category book price?

Simple: Lack of education.
Thats both the seller and buyer btw - For example it may be considered stupid that someone has put the price up on the kitted Corsa they are selling, but time and time again these cars get bought.
I'm not saying that this happens all the time (Look at how many modified cars are broken to sell in parts...) but there is folk out there willing to part with their cash for a rudeeeboi ready Corsa.

Personally - With Corsas I would only pay book price/over book price for the following reasons:
I knew that the Car was looked over like a gift from god and it was in some sort of god like A1 condition
20XE/LET Fitted
But the second one can't really be included in this discussion because there is no book price for a 20XE/LET Corsa.

As an example, my car has had over 6k spent on, albeit most of it Prodrive upgrades, but if I put it up for sale I can never expect to see a substantial return on any of it. For the most part when people see a car all kitted up, not just Corsas, it puts them off but it doesn't give a good impression of how the rest of the car has been treated. Having a car with huge wheels, low suspension, body kit etc limits the people who might want to buy your car to a select few.

This car. My pride and joy  I love it so much that the re-spray I'm doing on it at the moment will be worth in excess of £5k due to it going to bare metal and doing the arches and underfloor. It's going to have leather, a top spec sound system and a lot of custom bits. It's also going to be restored to a higher level then when it left the factory. It's not costing me much in parts, but labour (which I'm doing) there is again thousands of pounds worth of work going into it. It's also having a re-built 2.0 16v engine re-fitted into it.
However, all this doesn't detract from the fact that it's a 12 year old Vauxhall Corsa that is only worth about £500-£1000. Luckily I don't have any intention of selling this car for a very long time. When I do come to sell it I don't expect it to sell very easily either, unless for some reason it's a classic then

Neds that have just turned 18 who get loans will buy a already modified cars for more than there book value because they are naive and stupid.

i personally feel that very little mods add actual value to the car, they only add desirability to the right person.
i am forever educating customers about this at work, and it's the bain (spelling?!) of my life.
there will always be people out there though who feel that the mods on the car are so desirable they are prepared to pay over the value of the car to buy it.

this month it's bottom book price is £2800. for someone who wanted a track car they could buy a standard car like mine for £2800 but it would cost more than the extra £950 that i have added to my sale price to get the car to the same standard. i'm hoping that someone sees some value in the mods i have done and will make a saving in the long run

Everyone goes through a modified (kitted, spoilers, stupid sized wheels) car phase at some point in their life (usually 16-18yrs).....trying to deny it is like trying to deny you wank!!

a car is worth what people are willing to pay for it.
was david beckhams E36 M3 cab worth £90k? no. but it sold for that, so yes.
if someone is looking for it, it'll sell.

As did I, I bought a corsa GSi at 17, stuck on 17" alloys & chrome M3 wing mirrors....almost bought a Combat Kit of Koni Yates until someone told me not to because he was dodgy
