I wouldn't lie personally, if your mate's done wrong then its tough shit. Be selfish here and think of yourself, if your found to be lying then your in more shit than your mate probably

Whats the offence your mate has alledegly done?
I personally wouldn't lie for any fucker in court, as said above if found out then you are fucked and lawyers are very good at getting to the truth.

If you have been summoned by the court directly you have to go
If you have been asked by the defendants solicitor to form part of the defence then you dont have to but likes been said there could be other consequences like you not being liked very much

If the law requires you to go as a key witness in a case then you get a letter from the court telling you that you must attend
If you have agreed to be a witness to help your mate in his defence and have given the statement the reason you have to go to court is basically to swear on it being the truth
If you dont go your statement means jack and cant be used in defence and your mate will think your a twat
Thats the difference

Yes the barristers are good and if your found to be lying the case will fall down anyway
chances are you wont have to even go in because the barristers usually try and come to some agreement before hand
