Ok if someone could take a few mins to read this and advise i'd appreciate it
Last week the girl i run the office with was on holiday and we had the junior helping. My hours were 0730 - 1600 but i ended up working through my lunch and staying on for an hour to help out.
We also work every other saturday, and i agreed to work 2 saturdays in a row because she was on holiday.
She came back into workon Monday but has been signed off work because shes ill and is due back in next monday.
I have a feeling my boss is going to pressurise me into working saturday, but ive worked the last 2 and did about 5/6 hours of unpaid overtime last week. I've told them i cant do it because im running race for life on sunday and richie is in london so the only day ill be able to see him is saturday
What do i do? We used to work untill 1300 on a saturday which we had reduced to 1200 after we nagged our boss
I really don't want to do it because i feel like ive worked non stop and im absolutely nackered. But my contract is vague when it comes to overtime, but surely if ive made plans and stuff i cant just drop it because they have said so
thanks guys

It really depends on your contract Ally... mine for example has a clause written in that basically says you have to work when we say but that said they are reasonable.
It may be worth just sitting down with your boss and explaining the circumstances. If he/she then decides to be a prick about it it'll be worth looking into your contract in more detail to see how you stand

Yeh pab i know, this is a small company thou and someone has to be in to run the office. Ive been texting the girl i work with and she cant come in, the other lass had plans and so do i.
But here its like, everyone will get shitty with me because i wont drop everything and come into work. They dont understand over the last 10 days i have worked over 90 hours, im fking nackered, i havent seen my boyfriend and im running race for life on sunday

As i said it depends on your contract but i can't see your boss saying no to you working if it's because you need to rest before running Race For Life on sunday due to the fact you've worked 90 hours in the last 10 days....

all my contract says is 'Due to the nature of your position, you may be expected to work such hours as may be required to fulfil the needs of the job'

Same as mine... if your asked to work then realistically you have to - i'm sure you could get real picky with human rights and your union .etc But i think you'd be more beneficial from just telling your boss how you are running Race For Life .etc and see how they go from there..

are you on salary or hourly wage?
If your hourly you should deffo be paid. If your salary like me, you dont have to be paid, but if they really want you in, they can agree an overtime rate (which is common).
If you really dont want to do it, tell him you already have plans. if he doesnt understand that, then he's some kind of a cunt and your in the wrong job.
IF you would only do it for a large amount of money, simply ask if if its time and a half or double time.

Yeh, they already know everything but just seems like they are being really off with me.
Dont get me wrong, i love my job, and i get alot of perks so i wouldnt do anything to jeopardise (sp) my position here, but this is the one weekend where i really need to kick back, if i work and run on sunday then im going to be screwed for work next week

get a medical certificate...
no seriously, make the reason you are not working this: ' I have not been paid for my overtime hours, cannot expect to be paid for this one too....Until I get paid for my already worked overtime, I'm not working overtime...'
Tell him this on Friday evening...

Also states under hours of work -
You are required to work such additional hours as may be necessary on order to meet the requirements of the business

Ally, sounds like you have a great contract
If I had a contract like that, which basically says you have to work when we tell you even if its outside your contracted hours and you won't get paid for it, I would leave right now, infact pack your desk up and walk away.

this clause seems unfair imo...was Edd stated, the contract is wrong for you...
Best option: start of diarrhea and vomitting on Friday, continues until Saturday 1pm...then stops at 13: 01 on Saturday...what a miracle: you will be able to run your race
Nobody can check whether you have a diarrhea, well unless they come to the loo with you

Thing is, ive been here for 2 years and this has never ever been an issue before.
The company is a good company, we get a big xmas bonus and other bonuses and they really look after us
But when it comes to overtime, and covering people it just seems like one big grey area

well, phone up the head office and explain the facts and how unfair it that would be if you were to work tomorrow...
now don't explain why you can't work tomorrow because of Richie
