the race was red flagged. there was no podium ceremony iirc

Jas, Ratzenberger was killed the day before, or the Friday, Senna on race day, but i'm 95% sure the race never finished

At the start of the sixth lap Senna's car went straight off at Tamburello Corner. The Brazilian tried to turn the car in the final moments before hitting the wall but there was no escape. The car hit the wall! In the impact the front suspension of the Williams came back and hit Senna on the head. The car bounced back towards the track, throwing wreckage into the air, and slid to a halt beside the circuit. The doctors fought to save Senna's life and he was rushed by helicopter to Bologna. But from early on it was clear that there was no hope. Ayrton Senna died that evening.

The extent of Senna's injuries were not clear to many in the paddock and no-one complained that the race was restarted from the grid.

they didnt know til the evening. so you can forgive him for smiling at winning a GP early in his career...

That's twaddle. I watched the race and that didn't happen. In fact i've still got it on video.

That said, schumacher is still an arsehole and so was senna. Roll on the nazi getting the senna treatment.

What a fucking mess that race was
Reading all that: No-one was using thr driver's aids, Barrichello being flung upside-down and knocked unconscious, Ratzberger died, Lehto stalled on the grid and was hit from behind, Senna died and then Alboreto's wheel hit ferari pit crew

It was dire that weekend.

I remember thinking ''What the fuck next?!'' with each, more appaling incident than the last, during the three days.

I went round a mate's house after the race, for a few beers, a chat about the race and a bit of a Sega session.

We were all sat around jawing about what a horrendous weekend it had been, when my mate's Dad who was sat downstairs watching the news (not known for his diplomacy or gentle nature) shouts upstairs ''JAMES!... SENNA'S DEAD!''

We all just stared at each other, open mouthed in disbelief.

I went cold, I felt very strange.

I was realy surprised by my own reaction, I absolutely despised the man, but the news was so abrupt I was genuinely shocked.

We all absolutely hated the bloke, but it had seemed as though he would always be there as the nemesis of our heroes for us to hate, and his departure was so sudden and unexpected.

We felt robbed of our villain.

We were still thoroughly reeling from all the previous shit that weekend, and our enemy being erased in such a permanent way left us feeling very odd indeed.

I was looking forward to the possibility of seeing the loathsome senna and schumacher combo being roundly humiliated in return by Mansell and Hill over the next few years, and I was furious at the injustice of being robbed of the spectacle.

My childhood (and to this day also) hero, James Hunt, who had become the voice of F1 along with Murray Walker had died only months prior to the fated race weekend.

Due to that and other factors, I was already quite disheartened with the whole sport.

I carried on watching though of course because Mansell, Hill and Walker were still there to give us all a reason to breathe.

The dreadfull events of Imola 94 were a definite turning point in many respects and the sport was different after that.

I became disgusted as the rampant commercialism became even more rabid, and after Mansell, Hill and Walker all retired, I simply stopped watching Formula 1.

Like the song says... ''No more heroes any more''
