after my car failing its mot and needing new piston rings, i have 3 options

replace rings
replace engine
replace car

i dont know what to do, obviously replacing the rings will be more expensive than replacing the engine, but replacing the car will be better than replacing the engine

the car is only worth about 600 quid, and a rebuilt engine wouldnt be far off that really

just in time for pvs too

well mate I can't say I've ever seen a pic of you're motor so I don't know what it looks like to see if it would be worth getting a new engine in it, but I'd write off the idea of replacing rings straight away

4 hours is the problem, thats 220 quid

even though i work in a garage, i'd have to pay labour for that, as it would tie up the mechanic for a day

1st fast idle
CO level was 1.56% pass is 0.30%
HC level was 250ppm, pass is 200ppm

2nd fast idle
CO level was 1.07%, pass is 0.30%
HC level was 309ppm, pass is 200ppm

Natural idle
CO level was 1.00%, pass is 0.50%

thats why ainsley

i have been told by 3 different people that the CO level can be rectified (to some extent) with a new cat, but the HC means its burning oil, and the tester said that from experience, for them to be that high, its rings, not stem seals

Its probably easier to find a good engine though, rather than guessing at what could be wrong. Well thats what I would do anyway
