If you had say, about 22k max. to spend on a brand new hothatch what would you go for?
Something like a 2.0 TDi S-Line Audi A3 or a turbo petrol model such as a Golf GTi or Astra VXR?
The Audi has the looks of an upmarket sporty hatchback in S-line trim plus good MPG and its an Audi.
Its not as fast as the turbo petrol cars and obviously doesn't have the nice engine note you get with a sporty petrol!
Grown up side of me would say get the TDi but the daft side would say go for a petrol turbo model from a brand without as good a reputation and build quality and think about running costs later
Is just a hypothetical situation out of interest. Was a conversation I had with my Dad

Another thing is that you cant really drive a sporty car how its meant to be driven cos of the speed camera culture these days.

I've voted for ya Matty
I love them new Audi's especially the 3.2 quattro one I saw and fell in love with in my works carpark lastweek - front and rear disc brakes were massive

It comes down to the fact if you've gotta do alot of miles or not. In an ideal world i think everyone would buy the Petrol, but if your doing over 250 mile a week, diesel starts to become the viable alternative.
Just to throw something else into the equation (and, because an audi with the spec i'd want would be well over £20k), i think i'd settle for this...

However, the normal 1.9 CDTi 150BHP Astra, can be tuned to near enough 200BHP for around £300, and with the prices of second hand vauxhalls plummeting, it's quite a clever choice IMO.

The thing that is starting to hit home to me now is that Audis/VWs are so well built.
Vauxhall aren't bad but they dont have the same quality feel about them, they aren't in the same league.
So suppose it also comes down to whether you are happy to pay the extra to have an Audi badge and the build quality that goes with it...
I'm being a bit snobby here but I think I would rather say I drove a diesel Audi than a diesel Astra even if it was the 888 version of the Astra

Yeah, totally in a different league, but the prices show it really. Dad considered both, and an A3 was about £5k more expensive than the equivalent astra

yup you can get a nicely spec'd Astra VXR for a fair bit less than a basic TDi S-Line A3 diesel
