Can anyone explain the term

'small block'

and 'big block' in american cars?

I thought small block would be like a small V6/V8 or something

but 7 litre 350ci v8 doesn't sound small

A small block is precisely that, a small cylinder block. Usually around five litre capacity. Big blocks are normally anything from 7 litres up.
