Well I have been going to the gym alot this past month (5-6 on then 1-2 off)
Now at first I thought it was strange to be putting weight on!!
But now I have realised that its perfectly normall as I am training with free weights and the various weight machienes. I assume thats right as its turning fat into muscle?
Cant do too much cardio at the moment beacuse of my fucked knee but I do 20 mins at the start to warm up then do the weights for an hour and go back to cardio for a 10 min warm down.
So when I have finished turning fat into muscle do I then start to loose weight?
Main aim to start with was to drop the beer belly (student lifestyle dosnt help) and get some deffinition.
So still want to loose the beer belly etc
Anyone know? I have been told that AB crunches help to get rid of beer bellys but I dont know...

muscle weighs more than fat so you should be putting weight on if your doing a routine which prodominately aims towards muscle building....
some people usually experience a fluctuation of losing weight as fat is lost then regaining it as muscle.
Anyway thats my take on it but we have about 200 people on here who are health gods and know everything so they'll say i'm wrong and tell you whats right
10 Effective Ab Exercises:
Bicycle Exercise
Captain's Chair
Exercise Ball Crunch
Vertical Leg Crunch
Torso Track
Long Arm Crunch
Reverse Crunch
Full Vertical Crunch
Ab Rocker
Plank on Elbows and Toes

you will never lose a beer belly by doing ab workouts. You have to have a good diet and do plenty of cardio. If you just do ab workouts you'll be toning the muscles behind the fat!

oh yeah apologies forgot to mention that, it is true... you'd be better of doing general cardio to get ure weight down then those exercises to tone/enhance your stomach

i think im right in saying that fat does not turn into muscle.Ive been really hitting the weights this month and training with a new partner and a new diet which has helped alot.I have gained a stone in the last month and my body fat level has dropped. Its not just about lifting weights ,you have to lift them properly and in the right routine.Diet and rest are just as important if not more so than the actual training

ok my last contribution...
as anton002 said muscle doesn't turn to fat (or vice-versa). If you build up muscles and then stop, the muscle tissue does not turn to fat cells. What might happen to suggest this is that you continue to eat the same number of calories you needed when you were exercising, but since you no longer need that many, they (the calories) turn to fat while the muscles slowly wither away...
Also remember you lose body fat from all over your body proportionately, no matter where you burn the calories.

Its quite possible you are putting weight on due to lifting. However, you cannot 'turn' fat to muscle, they are totally different, you may be losing fat and increasing muscle mass however.
You are best off concentrating on one goal at a time- its more productive to focus on losing the beergut and then maybe focusing on increasing muscle mass a few months down the line, if that is what you are aiming for. But by doing weights and doing cardio you will notice more muscle definition as you lose fat and gain some muscle.
Try doing cardio on a different day to lifting, or at least after lifting, never before.
Make sure on you focus on your diet otherwise you are wasting your time.
Check out www.bodybuilding.com, theres loads of info there about gaining muscle, and losing fat.
Whats your current weight, height, build and bodyfat?

Theres no way you have put on a stone of muscle weight in a month, it takes many people many several months or even years to put on a stone of muscle. Most of that will be fat I am afraid. Sort your diet
For example I put on 9 pounds over the last 5months, with bodyfat remaining relatively constant. And that was with a good diet specific for building mass, and training weighs hard 3 times a week.

Post some pics and I'll make an estimate
Or buy some bodyfat calipers or scales, or go to a gym where they have some available.
Whats your diet like? Post up a sample of what you eat throughout the day and I'll make some suggestions.

Its probably going to be high
Diet wise:
Lunch's would be stuff like bowl of soup with a few slices of bread, buttys and maybe a pannini
Dinner's are stuff like stir frys, chicken in various sauces with rice, pasta and sauce, steak and chips 2 maybe 3 times a month. fish and chips occasionally ummm maybe a take away from the indian or chinease every now and then..
Diet isnt too bad, but could be better I guess

its more that you need to cut down on carbs and up your intake of protein
so pasta and stuff like that aint the best if your trying to loose weight.

with proper dieting and supplements...YES and esp if you are a beginner....you can put up a lot of weight until you hit a plato in 4-5 months then you will definitely need to train harder and will find putting on lean muscle mass quite difficult...

How about breakfast? Mid morning? Mid afternoon? Any other snacks throughout the day?
If I was looking as losing a belly and maintaining some muscle I would be eating 6 small meals per day. This will increase your metabolism and help you burn calories faster.
Decrease your fat and carb intake somewhat. If you are having simple carbs every meal such as White rice, pasta and chips you aren't going to lose the belly. Get rid of the takeaways, maybe have one a month to treat yourself.
I would be eating something like this if I were you.
Breakfast
Porridge, Egg Whites
Peice of fruit
Possibly a protein shake
Mid morning
Lean meat sandwich with brown bread. e.g Tuna, Turkey, Chicken
Lunch
Chicken/turkey breasts with salad
Fruit
Mid afternoon
Lean meat, salad, fruit
Dinner
Lean meat
Veges
Salad
Late evening
Eggs
Lean meat
Salad
This will also depend on when you workout.

Supplementation is 5% of what is takes to get bigger, there is no magic product that will make you put on that much muscle mass in so little time.
I agree with the beginner gains. But still 14 pounds of muscle in a month- not a hope in hell .Especially with his diet.

Agreed. But dont drop the carb too drastically otherwise your body will use your muscle as fuel.

Fat doesn't turn to muscle. You loose fat and muscle is created
