GO to the gym matey 
I do the rowing machines there, a quick 2000m here and there is all good.
I cant see climbing making you fit, rather you have to be fit to climb bu then again im no expert...

I can tell you as a climber it's not exactly an aerobic sport much more anaerobic (sp).
Definately worth taking up and even if you start by using an indoor wall make sure you get outside with someone more experienced at some point.
Have a look on www.ukclimbing.com to find people in your area.
Also if you want to get stronger buy a fingerboard they are awesome for improvements.
