ok i might aswell ask the question for the problem I have!

i have a movie which is 2.35:1 when i play this on my media centre i get thick black bars top and bottom.

Now the only way i can think of to reduce these black bars is to crop some of the sides of the movie to give it a different ratio ie 1.85:1

I dont want to lose parts of the movie really so is there another way of doing this? How does the TV make a film fit on a 4:3 screen? do they have access to different ratio source data or will they also have to chop bits of the film off?

if i simply resize the film to a different res, then it becomes stretched and disproportionate

640/480 = 4/3 (1.33333...)
560/240 = 2.333333 (which divided by 1 is obv still the same, rounds up to 2.35:1)

how did you get to it if its 720x480? which should be 16:9?

i understand how to do it if its X:1 but i dont understand how you did the 4:3 one?

720/480 = 1.5 which isnt the same as 16/9. Might just be a compromise with screen res though
