Went to local dvla office 2 weeks ago to retain my private plate but got a letter on friday asking me to bring the car for an inspection.
On the back page it states that "It is important that no. plates do not misrepresent the reg number in any way and it is an offence to deliberatly alter the size, or the spacing of the numbers and letters which make up the reg no. to form names."
They have legal letters and spacing but i cut them down, will i be ok? Local police even said they can't do me for them

not sure, but for the hassle of them being illegal i would be tempted to just bung some normal ones on for the day.

i dont believe there is any law as to the size or shape of the plate as long as it doesnt alter the text.
IE on the rover 75's you get a weird massive plate to fit the boot recess

looks fine. I presume the spacing between each letter is legal? its just the actual plate size thats reduced?

I think you should be fine as long as you have at least 12mm border all the way around which looking at it I would say you do have.
Luckily never had to have any of my cars inspected when I have changed my plate over. Do they bascially check the car over to see if its road worthy?

There is a minimum size, but no maximum size.
