put a valver in. then if you do get bored of the power it makes, throttle body it! steve f has one on throttle bodies (plus a shed load of other tuning) and its got around 250bhp

valvers are reliable, but to make sure its going to be, your best off rebuilding it rather than finding any old lump and throwing that in. thats the mistake my mate made.

trust me m8 my mrs owns a 1.6 sport i got a valver, and 2.0 is superior to the 1600 engine not just performance wise i mean way it feels and produces the power they pull strong in every gear to limiter they are good engine.

my valver only had cambelt and bare essentials changed with just top end rebuild and trust me my valver hits the limiter daily over and over and it has not put foot wrong in over year now.

i blew up 2 x14/16xe engines treating them as i do my valver in pretty much half the time so this to me proves valver is bombproof, like i say its bin most relibale engine ive had and its 15 years old my other had half mileage and 3rd of the age

LOVERLY CAR mate.

Personally i would go for a 1.6 16v and tune that up, and with valvers you are forever spending money on them and repairing them!!!

BUT if its a weekend car put a valver in. but if using it every day 1.6

this is what makes me laugh teddy pmsl how often do u come accross a race spec 1.6 corsa i ent yet

there are some factors to consider i think u cant say one engine is unreliable and another is, all u can do is give an opinion on how ur own engine/s have been, my 2 small block xe's were shit and allways broken, my 15 year old crap xe keeps up with modern market in performance and has never broken yet so it has been more reliable and it gets used every single day
