That's funny because the induction I had when I was working temp at their warehouse said that it was set up by a heterosexual couple who wanted to sell clothing and music in the same store. Originally it was going to be called "Pants and Discs" but the wife refused, instead calling the shop "Gap" referring to the niche market they were breaking into.
Gay and Proud is just amusing folklore.

Im 100% certain it was set-up as a Gay company. They tried to brush off that image and enter the mass market, as that was what out whole project was based on! Thats why it isnt on their site or anything.

I bet you got a good mark for it too, were you meant to write fiction?

Notice how that just says Doris and John set it up in 1969. I bet if you look further into it you'll find what it was originally set-up for.

All I know is that all the printed data we got given at College about the history behind GAP pointed towards it standing for 'Gay and Proud'. We had loads of info on it, from alot of reliable + well known sources.

I'm not disputing that GAP was an acronym for Gay And Proud, but the company name is coincidence.
It's more humorous to believe it's true than not, and to be honest, probably gave you more to write about for your tutors... maybe they gave you the handouts for a laugh?
