Right as some of you know i want to get a 1.8 corsa before that happens however i have to convince my parent why i should have a 1.8 not 1.4. it there money so there choice.
so go forth and argue my case..
btw i would point out that i will be happy with either car and that before any of you tell me yes i am spoilt

From a parents point of view I can't see any valid reason why they would buy you a 1.8 over a 1.4. The 1.8 is more expensive, dearer to insure, will use more petrol, and is faster so will be more dangerous.
Not gunna go down too well with the parents !

But on a serious note just go for the 1.4 will cost less to run insure and you have less chance of dieing @ a high speed

"1.4 engines are generally weaker than the 1.8s, the headgaskets are prone to fail every few thousand miles due to weak heads warping. The 1.8 engines are based on an older more reliable design, and are stronger as they were designed for larger cars like the Zafira and Meriva.
Basically, the 1.8 is a better engine, far more reliable, and will be easier to sell on."

and u will keep the 1.8 longer as the engine is big enough to last u years  instead of getting 1.4 and then wantin a bigger engine next year then end up getting a 1.8 anyway

You're less likely to change the car in the future so its a better financial move, if you cleverly manage to overlook insurance, fuel, purchase price and increased depreciation in you discussion.

first no this is not my first car, my first car has been really unrealiable so my parents decided that the cost of repairing it was getting silly.
and rcb thank you very much for your well thought out comments they were insightfull and really made me really think about my life, i had a really good cry thank you

honestly i think the biggest problem is the fuel. speed i can convince them about, insurance is oddly very close to my current and acctual cost is not much higher between models.
