Does anyone have a clue what the thign in the pic is??

We have pretty much stripped all the interior for work and have now fitted my toad alarm...! Anyway 4 one of the immobiliser points we have made it disable the starter motor and we were messing around under the steering wheel (mostly the ignition area) and we think it may come from around that area!

its off the plug on the back of the ignition switch

that is used in 2 places, on steering column where ignition barrel is and it is used on some makes of pretensioner on corsas and astra f's

what does the piece actually do because we started the car up and it seemed ok? obviosuly i do wana fit it again just curious to what the part does!
