I went out to start the car tonight and on turning the key the engine turned over, caught then cut out making a funny slapping noise, I tried to turn the key again and the noise came from the cam belt cover, i'll have to wait till daylight to take the cover off, I'm hoping and praying that the belt is still in tact

I disagree with the high rpm's comment, most people i know that have had the belt snap at speed have had minimal damage, some just new belt and away to go!!! most of the people that I know that have snapped at low rpm or ticking over have done the most damage,

Right just had the cam cover off and the belt is still intact, however the water level is again zero and i've had to fill it up for the 2nd time this week which leads me to the water pump

Now the car aint over heating and the heater is still blowing hot air once warmed up properly so is it OK to try and start the car even though the pump might not be working???

I need to know if I can try starting it first

It might just be a sticky starter if so then is it safe to try and turn the engine

no, i wouldn't risk it, if the water pump is gone, then the cam belt could throw itself off too.....

doesnt matter what speed or rpm the engine is doing the damage could still be as bad, all the damage is done on the first rotation anyway
