They have a time delay as legally you can go through an amber light if it is safer to do so than slam the brakes on to stop. However, there is a fine line between that and an amber gamble, which will trigger the camera

the camera should only take a pic if a part of your car is across the line whilst the lights are on red, a mate of mine got done when he only had the back couple of inches of his bumper over the line.
bloody cameras are a pain in the arse, because whereas a copper would have probably just let you off a camera automatically issues a ticket

Same thing happened to me. Crossed the line on Amber, turned red before I reached other side. Got the flash. And two months on no ticket. So i'm in the clear. Thise traffic light Gatso's are sneaky though. They can do you for a traffic light offence as well as a speeding offence (as people tend to race to the lights to get thorugh on Amber/Red. So the maximum you can get is 6points (2x3points) and a double fine. That's worst case scenario. BUT... not all of them have film in them. So even if you did offend and it falshed there's only a 30-40% chance that it had film in it.
The other thing is that they tend to flash people that go through on Amber (legally) and not issue a ticket... just to basically teach our drivers (through weeks of worrying) to stop on Amber rather than try to make it through even though it's not an offence to do so. Hope that helps. If you ask me you'll be fine. That's from my experience and knowledge about them.
