those wee yellow square things are sea bed receivers for an electromagnetic source
They help to tell oil companies wether potential wells identified by conventional seismic are oil/gas/water etc

the concrete slab on the bottom is an anchor. Its released when a signal is sent to the receiver. It then floats to the surface, to be picked up, and re-deployed elsewhere.
The electromagnetic source pumps out 1000a, 80v at 0.25Hz (i think, not my equip)

i look after the navigation systems, tell the dudes where to dump the receivers etc. So provide accurate positioning data, along with the receiver data to get a good 'picture'. I.e the geophys need to know where the receivers and source are. We use USBL (acoustic pingers) to position all these things on this survey, as they are all under water. The source is towed 30m above seabed, depth is 1800m just now. On conventional seismic surveys with airguns the source is positioned with RGPS or by laser.
Paul - I applied for it..... above is my job

it does involve quite a bit of UNIX/Linux sys admin, and networking. But thats just a side to the real purpose of me being here.
Quite a bit of hardware too... A lot of control units to go wrong etc.
