I've seen some people on here running their engines with no cam belt cover on.
Isn't this a bad idea?

in theory yes, i run mine with no cam belt cover because i have verniers and it looks cool... also iv had the timing adjusted a few times and it makes doing this quicker..... running without it can cause a risk of a stone or twig or other crap getting caught in it and throwing the cam belt off.....

Yes it is.
A small fly could fly into the cambelt area and land on the belt as its moving. This could in turn make the belt sag due to the extra weight and make it weaker causing it to snap

But even with vernier pulleys, isn't it still a bad idea to run with no cam cover?
Or are they different in some way to normal pulleys?

well the engine bay is so tight i doubt there will be a problem, i mean have you ever had anything pull your altinator belt off? nope! its mainly to stop your getting your hand caught in it to be honest, at a guess.
vernier pulleys can be adjusted accuratly, and for this ot be dont the cover needs ot be off, so i leave it off...

It's a shame you can't get some kind of transparent cover. That would probably be safer?

Taking top half off isn't dangerous your more likely to get crap in the bottom half from the road don't see how anything could make it up to the pulleys and looks better IMO also easier to adjust verniers as said above

i run without one cos i'm cool..... well nah not really.... the real reason is because the rear part of my timing belt cover is cracked in shit and i cant be arsed to pay money for a new and then stripdown the whole front of the engine to fit it....
my advise is if you can fit yours fit it...

You could always cut the cam cover so you can adjust the pullies
