I went to the local HSBC branch earlier to pay some cash in to my account, the guy in front of me, some Kosovan or something , tried to pay a cheque into his account but the 'To:' bit on it wasn't written out to anyone.

The clerk hands the cheque back to him saying they can't accept it because there is no-one's name written on it, so he asks her who's name has to be on the cheque to which she replies "yours"...

So he writes his name and gives the cheque back to the clerk who promptly processes his deposit for him.

From where I was standing, I could see his writing was much different to the handwriting on the cheque originally, so it's not like he was depositing a cheque from another of his accounts or anything.

I am worried about keeping my money with a bank like this now...

The other week, because of some fuckup between Maestro and HSBC, I got debited twice for Maestro transactions on one particular day, so they refunded the money... TWICE. Had to phone them up AGAIN to tell them this, a few days later they took the over-credited money out of my account.

My brother (who's also with HSBC) got a loan out with them a few months ago, they haven't taken any repayments from his account so he asked why, they said "your payments don't start until a year's time", he was like WTF?! Why? and they said "we don't know"!

I see it as a problem, because the whole cheque is supposed to be written out by the payer!

It's not like you're paying in cash...

doesn't have to be by law or anything, you can write the date, amount, persons name after the cheque is given, just depends on what the person paying the cheque allows!

Yeah, they gave me dispute numbers for each transaction, and it was sorted the next working day.
