Right I've sold an old (music) keyboard of mine for £17.99 on eBay yesterday, with a P&P cost of £20 for Special Delivery.
The guy sent me a message today saying he can't pay until thursday which he claims is his pay day, so I replied back and said this is OK, now he has sent another reply asking me to price up delivery with 2nd class post because he thinks £20 is a "bit steep".
What should I do?
Not being funny but if he thought this before, what was the point in bidding for it? Do I have to entertain his request for P&P by 2nd class post?

Assuming you are not profiting on P&P, I would outline the drawbacks, ie. slower and less insurance, and if he is OK with that do that.

No you don't have to entertain it but it could be fair to charge him some of your fee's and readjust postage to second class or standard parcel with compensation cover. It depends if you were trying to make anything on postage

To be honest I haven't packed the keyboard up yet as it's an old one with no box etc. I just put £20 because I remember my other keyboard that I sold cost £19 to send by Special Delivery (although that was heavier and boxed).
So I probably am profiting from P&P but not by much I don't think?
What happens for arguments sake I sent it 2nd class and it got lost in the post, do I have to give him his money back?

Up to you, I would say be cheap if you want but if it gets lost his problem. Get proof of postage and hope it isn't lost or damaged because he'll have wasted £30 on nothing.

Hmmm...
OK I will reply to him tomorrow and tell him I will get a price for sending it recorded but not second class, but I will point out to him that if it gets lost or damaged I will not pay anything towards it as he didn't want to get it sent quickly and with insurance (ie. Special Delivery).
Thanks for your help guys!

If you stated £20 then thats what he must pay!
you dont bid for something then haggle on the postage
its a price for postage and packaging
you named your price for postage it was his choice to buy
Its not like some auctions you see where no price is offered , then you get hit with a charge of £20
that to me is different
I would just have chose not to bid

Agreed the buyer is an idiot, but the type of person to bid and then haggle is also the type of person to leave bad feedback saying the goods were too expensive.

It will be too heavy for second class. Maximum is 750g. Standard parcels will be cheaper. Why are you sending it Special anyway?

All of Royal Mails services offer insurance of at least £30. Given that its worth £17.99, it doesn't matter which service you use.

Fuck it, I'm just sticking to my guns. This is what I just sent him:
quote:
Hi,
To be honest I don't want to send it by any method other than Royal Mail Special Delivery, as it is guaranteed next working day before 1pm, and it is also insured against losses or damage.
Please note that I have to take into account packaging costs as well as postage costs, as the keyboard is not boxed (as stated in the auction).
Sending items like this by Special Delivery ensures there is no problems if anything happened to the item during transit (ie. if it got lost, damaged or stolen), can be tracked, is insured, and I am able to provide proof of postage - sending it by the method you are enquiring about does not offer any of the above, and will just cause problems later on should anything bad happen.
Regards,
Sam

If it stated in the auction that the postage was special delivery, and no other service was offered then thats what you should post it via, unless the buyer contacts you before buying the item.

That's right Ally that was the only method of postage quoted on the auction, and he didn't contact me til after the auction ended (to say he couldn't pay til today )

You can get proof of posting with second class. And as before, it is still insured for £30.00.

The postage costs are part of the costs the buyer should weigh up before buying the item. I often put random postage costs in and make money out of postage, its all part of Ebay imo. It's too much messing about, especially if your posting abroad.

stand your ground man, postage is £20 so he should pay £20.
just say that, if he dont pay then report him then put it back on.
you get a seller refund from ebay and he gets a strike for not paying.
only problem is feedback, just say if you leave bad feedback you will also leave bad feedback, remember you can reply to feedback left to you.

Well like I say he's paid me £37.99 last night - £17.99 for the keyboard plus £20.00 P&P.
After I packed it up last night I weighed it and it came to 5KG - 2KG to 10KG is £19.00 by Special Delivery, so this is proof enough that I am not ripping him off on P&P.

Yes I won't leave feedback until he does so first...
Can I report him for leaving bad feedback if he leaves me bad feedback? Because I technically have not done anything wrong?
