Okay.. Trying to decide whether to do uni or not...
Cant really justify to myself ~£18000 worth of debt and no job.. When I could go straight into a full time job and be earning money.. What do you feel worked best for you guys and whats your opinions on it all

Contacts in the industry are worth more than degrees IMO.
Most people I know with degree's are working in Retail.

Unless your planning on being a doctor, nurse, lawyer, barrister etc etc then no.
imo uni is a way of pissing your money away, one of mny old school friends has gone to study French ... what a fucking waste of money, he would have been better taking the money and moving to france for the 2/3/4/5 years the course runs.
Im sure people will disagree as alot of companies prefer to emply people with degrees, but no i would not go.

The course im looking at, and the only one im interested in is
BA Hons, Computer and Video Games. I have the prequisite to get onto this course due to what im studying at the moment, and visited the uni today..
I just dont know if its really worthwhile when I could be earning £20k a year from a full time :/

Most jobs want a Degree plus 3 years industry exp.
If the degree offers a year out, take it

Aye the year in industry gives you a foot in the door for when you come out of education as alot of the companys will offer you a job if you impressed them during your year working for them

in my opinion and my life no...
I left school with o leverls etc,
had a few jobs before i got my present one where I have been 13 years started as a Operator then Technical Assistant and team leader and to my present position of Equipment Engineer....
Uni would not have helped me..
guy started a year ago, he has an honours degree in Electronics and NO experience what so ever, I have been training him up.

i think not. dont get me wrong, but its good for some people and not others.
i didnt go to uni and i make £60k+ a year. it took 7 years of shitty hard jobs and some lucky breaks to get here but im so glad i didnt do uni, some of my mates have only just come out of education, have had no real work experience and a shedload of qualification that mean fook all in the real world. most of them have jobs in which they make less than £20k a year and it will be years before they get anywhere. plus they are 15k in debt!
it wasnt for me

all depends on the career path u wish to follow...
i did computer science (with sandwich placement) cos i wanted to be a software developer... and most of the top jobs require me to have a degree.
i've left uni with debts of around 12k but managed to get my first job for BT earning 20k which isnt bad for a recent graduate
i do agree that sum ppl go to uni and take a shite degree which has no relevance to their career they wish to have..... etc
i do recommend taking a placement year out as it helps ya with ur final year and also gives u a head start when u are apply for a job after uni.
end of the day... it all depends on ur career plans and whether or not university is ur type of thing.

this is not true in all cases but...... u'll find tht ppl with degree TEND to earn more in there life times than ppl who didnt. iirc its sumthing like 80-100k but DONT quote me on that!!!!!
i think in the long term... u will earn more and have greater opportunities with a degree.... but this is not always true.... all depends on urself really

If you're going to use it - yes. If you are serious about aiming for an excellent grade and going for a job which requires it - yes.
If not, don't waste the time and money.

it depends on what career path you want to take. I want to be a mechanical engineer, but unless i got an apprentiship, i didn't really have a chance without doing a degree. Also by doing this course i am working towards CEng status, which is a bonus.
The course i'm on is a sandwich course, which is ideal because it will give me that first step into my chosen career and it will give me a decent bit of experience i can take with me when i graduate (hopefully !!!)
but like ppl have said, it depends what job you want and whether it requires you to have a degree. If it dosen't, then its up to you whether you start earning and learning on the job or go to uni and probably be paid a premium for being qualified.

agree with ian, i guess some of us want to aim higher and push the boat out and some people are happy with the average or even less.
would not of got my job without my degree for two reasons, 1st off i need the qualifications, and secondly i worked there on placement so it was a good contact to have

oh and i had the best fooking 4 years of my life, made friends in every corner of the world and know someone in just about every town/city across the uk, so i am never short of places to go and people to see, and once they all get established in good jobs, the connections awill be awsome. i come back to home and see people who did not go to uni doing the same things as 4 years ago, with the same people, and it looks like it will stay that way forever where i can look all over for new jobs etc anywhere were i want
i also made my parents proud too, which is always good
my g/f also needs her degree to become a teacher, and the same thing applies to her

Having a degree isn't going ot do you job prospects any harm in any field.
I go to Uni as I don't know what I want to do as a career, Showing that I can study to a degree level, is better than being stuck in a dead end job for another 3 years still getting no closer to knowing what i want to do.

i left uni last year with fuck all but a pickled liver and a nice loan to have to pay back
however, i dont regret the 4years i spent there as without the experiences ive lived through i wouldnt be the person that ive developed into today. but if someone asked me if it was a good way to waste muchos dollars and 4 years i wouldnt exactly encourage them to do the same

A degree doesnt have the same status it did say 15 years ago. You can leave school with rubbish A levels and get a degree, its the governments way of giving the impression we are an educated nation
If you are going to do a vocational course yes, if not think long and hard.
It doesnt have to be as expensive as people say - spend the cash when you earn it
