stick a sim card in it, It will say unregistered sim, if it doesn't say anything like that, try ringing it from another phone, if it doesn't work it will have been barred. No use in this country once it's barred.

Well it hasn't been reported lost or stolen, I suppose it could still be stolen but if its not a cheap phone its would be odd for it not to be reported.

If it gets blocked go to the police

They'll happily follow up the investigation with the person who sold you it.
