I have been asked to go contracting by one of the companies my work contracts me out to...
My work gets £750 or so a day for me..... i get a fraction of that.
If i left, i'd have no basic salary (as i get just noe), and no firm gaurantee of work if things dry up. I'd be on a flat day rate of £450 or so, but all going to me
The money i stand to earn by leaving could be upto 2x what i'm on just now, which is pretty decent.
They seem to think they will be busy with contracts etc for the next ten years. This will be more apparent by early 2007, so may wait till then as i just got a promotion and payrise from my work.
hmmm....

I believe the word you're looking for might be tossers?
I doubt they would wait till 2007 for a response it's just one of those decisions you gotta make. Maybe tell your current work what you've been offered and if they want to keep you they might offer a payrise or a bonus of some sort.

my pension at the moment is quite good...
I pay 10% of salary, they match it. That i would have to sort out myself if i left.
If i were to ask for a wage rise (which i've just had) they could not match the wages i'm talking about.
Its not a case of BP waiting till 2007 for a decision.... it more a case of me making a decision when the time is right. My current employer has a contract with them for another year. It will be evident in early 2007 if there is more future scope.

I'd think very carefully, the only thing that made me say that is the fact you're obviously in a very well well paid and stable job at the minute and the fact it's a very specialist 'trade' if contracts were to dry up if you went solo how easy would it be to get back in to the exact same role and earn the same money. It's all well and good to be ambitious and want to earn more, but you've obviously got a good standard of living at the moment i'd be inclined to stay put.

i have a BSc Computer Science but i'll be fucked if i'm going to be a programmer
I have no agreement with my work, no contractual agreement, that states i cannot work for X when i leave.
Other things to think about would be i'd have to sort my own tax etc.... but for a potentail 80k a year
It is all about risks, thats why i havent simply gone 'mmmkay, show me the money'
I'm holding my horses to see how it pans out over the next few years. The project i'm on just now is the first of its kind.... has been going for 2 and a bit years an the second setup has just been confirmed for the UK sector.
Another possiblility would be to set up my own personel company... starting with myself of course, but contracting others when i canny be assed and taking a cut. Give them 250 a day, take 200 for myself... something like that (this would not be as simple as it sounds though)
The money i'm on at the moment is quite good for my age etc, but it does involve being away from home for long periods of time... something i'm not wanting to do forever! So strivking whilst the money is up for grabs may be the best option...

Go for it m8, earn shit loads of money whilst its there. Im sure you have the minerals to take up permanent employment again with a company if the contracts dry up. Perhaps with the money you will be earning you could put some away to fall back on if you end up out of work for a while?
Regarding pensions cant you set up your own stakeholder or something?

I agree, go for it. Its not like you have kids or anything depending on your finances (thinking worst possible scenario)

Do it. Loads of people do contract work especially in IT and make an awesome living out of it. Good contractors demand good rates and are rarely out of work.
What exactly is it you do?

Whats the worse that can happen - you have to sell a car or three?
What is the likelyhood that after tax and messing you still have exactly the same take home as you currently do over the course of 12/24 months?
If its likely you will at least break even then you're young enough to have a go?
