Me and my Dad had a test drive a bit ago in a new shape Astra 3 door but it was only a 1.6. Seemed nice but the engine was too small for the size of the car, had no go about it. I thought it was a pretty decent car and build quality seemed good. My Dad seemed impressed and looked like he was going to buy a CDTi 4 door version but got home yesterday and hes bought a brand new 2.0 GT TDi 140bhp 4 door Golf!

I wasn't that keen on it when I first saw it as it looks like every other boggo Golf, expected it to have GTi bumpers & wheels or something to spruce it up a bit seen as though its a GT. But got inside and have to say was sooooo much nicer than the Astra!Astra was by no means bad but the build quality in this Golf is excellent and the sports seats are very comfy.

Although my Dad did say he originally went to get a black one (which I would of prefered) but had a good look at it and said alot of the panels didn't sit right e.g. drivers door didn't line up with the wing properly so he ended up buying a silver one as it didn't have any faults.

Can't really make a proper comparison between the engines. The Astra was a 1.6 petrol and this Golf is a 2.0 diesel.
Its rapid though and so effortless. Take it to 3k in every gear without even booting it and your soon breaking the national speedlimit. So much quicker than the older Golf TDis

I didn't think I'd like the Golf but I love it. Now I need to see find out what the petrol Golf GTi is like in comparison to the Astra VXR, see if its the same story there.

Just thought I'd give my view on the 2 cars although its not strictly a fair comparison with them being different engines. I am Vauxhall biased too but prefer the Golf in this case Sorry if I've bored you with the essay

I find my Astra build-quality to be pushing that of some German cars I've been in. Have to say though I've never been a Golf fan (the GTi drivers seem to think they're in a supercar).

I personally think the VXR will be top of its class... can't wait to have a go in one

I cant wait to compare them cos as I say the way I've compared isn't really fair!

I did think the Astra was good build quality, just not as good as the Golf. Felt more upmarket.

If I was in the situation of buying either a VXR or a GTi I would probably go for the VXR cos I like the looks and I like my Vauxhalls. But havent driven them yet so could change that opinion if I do!
