It was on national geographic, iv never watched this channel in my life but thought id swiitch it over after hearing about the program on the radio.

It was about a 737-400 when they were first made, and the crash that happened in it on the M1. Iv a facination with planes anyway and know my way around the cockpit, especially the 737, after spending several years learning how to fly one on flight sim.

I found it a very good watch, learning about the flaw in the CFM engine, and how it fooled the pilot into shutting down the wrong engine!

For anyone that didnt watch it, plane journey from heathrow to ireland. Midway through flight plane developed a fault in the engine, a blade shed on the fans causing the engine to stall and shudder. Because this was a new plane both pilots assumed the aircon was fed from the right hand engine as in the previous 737 model. They could smell smoke in the cockpit and diagnosed it was coming through the aircon which led them to believe the engine at fault was the right hand engine.

In the passengar compartment passengars could see it was the LEFT hand engine that was sparking, but the pilots couldnt see it from the cockpit. Going on the knowledge they had they shut down the RIGHT hand engine (the only good remaining engine!!!)

What they didnt know is that boeing had made a change to the aircon system which was now fed by BOTH CFM engines, and the smoke was actualy coming frm the broken LEFT hand engine.

The shuddering stopped when they shut down the good engine, so this convinced them theyd shut down the problem engine.

The reason it stopped when they shut down the GOOD engine is because they have to disengage Autothrottle which cuts the fuel being supplied to the engine! This mean they were running on a broken engine that had simply just stopped shaking due to decrease in fuel!

Made a divert to land to get it fixed, everything was going fine until the broken engine they were flying on decided to pack up altogether, only 21kms away from east midlands airport they managed to glide down with no engines only 900metres fro the runway they crashed into the M1! 49 were killed rest survived

was this the British Midland one? this is the result of what happens when a pilot is allowed to fly an aircraft that he has not fully oriented himself with. although i remember some part of blame was placed upon Boeing since the air con packs were fed from both the bleed air ducts on both engines, a function that didnt exist on the 737-300. shouldnt really have happened, but thats the case with nearly all air crashes

if you are inevitably going to crash, get to the back of the plane and curl up into a ball. otherwise just scream your lungs out like the woman you are

worse than that i think.

Don't think it's fair how they partially blamed it on Keys though. Could of been a number of things (others not re-acting quick enough to instructions etc).

Then again he may have just mistaken the levers

the best place to sit on a plane is over the wing as this is structurally the strongest part of the plane, just gotta hope the fuel doesnt ignite when you crash

because of this incident a simple word from the passengars to the pilot saying they could see spark from the left hand engine could have saved them all. Theyu encourage communication between passengars and cabin crew now because of this

I think i read about that in a book about the history of the SAS.

Some soldiers were going somewhere and passed the crash just after it happened, the soldiers then made a big contribution to the rescue effort or something like that.
