When others have the same idea, you unnecessarily bump up the price, and before you know it, you've reached the max amouunt you would have been willing to pay, with x amount of days remaining.
Whereas, if you let the auciotn sit at a low price, with some oik thinking that they're gonna win it with their £10 starting bid... you can plough in with seconds to go, bidding the max price you would pay for it (e.g. £200) & probably win it at a fraction of that.
