laptop batteries are renown for being shite.
And most people ruin them theirselves by not using the battery properly.

e.g, leaving it plugged in perminantly, even when its full, does not do it any good.
The idea is charge it up full, pull the lead out, and let the battery drain, and then charge it up again, the same as mobile phones.
Charging it up half way through is not ideal.
I know some people will not agree with that, but hey.

I have bought a couple of laptop batteries from EBatts.

I always have mine plugged in when I have the chance and I know it probably ruins the battery but when you are gaming on it you don't know when the battery will run out as it will probably be quite soon.

Also it's not good to let it run right down and then recharge it either.

On another note I always leave my phone uncharged until it gets down to 1 or 2 bars (has about 7) as my lst on eogt ruined and the same has happened to my ipod

I have to agree with Adam.
If you can its actually best to let it switch itself off, then recharge it completely.

If your battery doesn't seem to last as long as it did in the past, your battery may be suffering from a battery phenomenon called "memory effect". Basically, this means that if a battery is repeatedly only partially discharged before recharging, the battery will create a "memory" of the level to which it was discharged and "forget" that it can further discharge. With NiCd and NiMH batteries, the best way to prevent this situation is to fully charge and discharge your battery on a regular basis.

Also:

There are several things that you can do to ensure the maximum performance from your battery: Never leave your battery in its charger for more than 24 hours. Doing so will shorten the life of your battery. Break in your new batteries. The best way to do this is by fully charging and discharging your new battery several times in order to reach its maximum capacity. Keep the contacts of your batteries clean. You can clean dirty batteries with a cotton swab and alcohol. A clean contact will ensure a good connection between your battery and its device. Do not leave your battery dormant. Generally, a battery should be used every two to three weeks to ensure that it maintains a proper charge.

Li Ion batteries do not suffer from the 'memory effects' above. Shouldn't matter when you charge them (half flat, etc).

Some batteries require recalibrating, however, as the charging circuitry loses track of the state of the battery -- look on the laptop manufacturers website for such a tool...

Exactly right, just like the battery in a modern mobile phone. Besides, laptops clock down the speed of the processor when off the mains, anyone who runs a laptop on battery power when there is a plug right there needs help.

Leaving it plugged into the mains all the time fucks up the battery. If you're gonna have it plugged in all the time, then take the battery out first before you plug the machine into the mains.
