If I saw a car like Lucky B's old one I'd half expect it to be fast now. I always expect subtle cars to be "sleepers" now
I'd be more surprised if some tatty kitted up car was faster in a race I think, as they're usually driven by younger people or Neds who can't insure fast cars.

It comes from the phrase 'Street Sleeper' which was in popular use in certain areas of the motoring press (Fast Lane etc) in the early eighties and probably earlier.

It may well be a corruption or play on words of the term street sweeper aswell, possibly describing something visually docile yet able to sweep it's path clear of all comers.

It refers to a powerfull car that appears unassuming - the classic wolf in sheeps clothing.

Also, transients and down and outs are often referred to as street sleepers and are (understandably) not known for their mild reaction to being woken up.
The use of the phrase to describe a vehicle may well be a direct reference to the antisocial behaviour of a very powerfull but understated or even scruffy looking car being roused by someone with a heavy right foot.

Would idealy have to be equipped with a tartan car blanket on the parcel shelf, some nasty Halfords wheel trims on 14 inch black steels, a 'baby on board' logo and some of those stick on dog pictures on the back to completely fool all of the people all of the time though.
