Just spoke to my mate from uni. His mate who sometimes came out with us on nights out had a car accident.
He was going down a dual carriageway in his Alfa 156 - when (possibly rear tyre blow out?) it lost control, hit the central barrier - rolled and hit a lamp post!
The guy was cut out of his car (which took 2 hours to do), then taken to hospital where he was unconsious for 24 hours! He has 2 broken legs, 2 broken wrists and is very bruised and cut! Apparently very lucky to be alive.
Fucking hell, I only saw the bloke about a month ago when it was my mates 21st. So harsh.

Yeh does make you think - 1 of my tyres has a big notch out of the side of the tyre wall and it does worry me that it could blow out at any time

It makes me feel glad i bought 2 new tyres this weekend,
can tyres just blow for no reason? What makes it happen?

Many things, if it's underinflated and driven fast this can sometimes cause them (which can happen from a slow puncture etc)... any damage to the tyre / tyre wall etc.
I remember seeing a police video of a uk police car chasing another car on the motorway and then having a blow out! This was a trained cop, and yet the car ended up spinning all over the 3 lanes.

Best to just leave your car jacked up on axle stands at all times
