i had a car parked up on the end of my road come to it this morning and it had gone.i called the police to inform them that the car had been stolen.they said that they have recovered the car and it was at a compound. i asked the police where they had recovered it from they told me the name of the street i said to them thats the street i had left it parked on. i asked them what damaged had been done they said that the car door had been bent back slightly and there was a small dent on the door. i explained to the police that i had bought the car a few days ago with the damage. i asked to have a look round the car to c if there was any other damage i said no and said it hasnt been stolen so y did u tow it away they said cause it looked suspicous with the door been bent back. i asked them to relase the car they said that i would have to pay 300 to get the car released. i said why am i havng to foot the bill when u took the car for no reason. the copper said look lad u either pay it or the car wont be released i said to the copper i dont have the money and told him to do what he wants with the car he said if u dont pay the bill the car will be scraped and u will still be left with the bill.. surely they cant do this can anyone please offer my some advice

legally they should notify the owner though the post you can find various info on these sites
http://www.faqfarm.com/Q/If_your_car_is_impounded_what_is_the_law_regarding_notification_before_they_can_sell_your_car_at_a_lien_sale_auction
http://www.faqfarm.com/Q/FAQ/1759
also these are the things that the police look for to justify impoundment
10 ways to spot an abandoned car:
Does it look vandalised and/or fire damaged?
Does it look unused and in poor condition?
Has it been there for over a week?
Is there a valid tax disc?
Are the wheels or petrol cap missing?
Have parts been removed or damaged? (e.g. broken windows or flat tyres)
Has it been parked or abandoned in an isolated or unusual location?
Is it a known area for abandoned vehicles?
Have you seen anybody use it or act suspiciously around it?
It is full of rubbish/hazardous material/ combustibles?
that list can be found here http://www.northamptonshire.gov.uk/Transport/Motorvehicles/Parking/abandoned+vehicles.htm
best course of action is for legal help, http://www.lawexpress.co.uk/shop/shop.html is a company that u pay for one off £40 and give u all the help u need to find out wat to do with a phone call.
Good Luck dude

tbh the police probably had reason to take it if it had that damage on it, but should have released it free when they found out it was legitmatly parked there

Couldnt they have contacted the owner first to see if it had been reported stolen or something.
Seems very odd.

imo if they have seen it there they should have done a check on it.
I presume it was parked outside your house so if they had done a police check on the car it would have presumebly come up with your name and address at which it was parked outside.
Go on the sites above and get a list of the laws, before you pay for legal advice take the laws down the station, and threaten legal action, they probably wont give a toss but worth a try?

if he'd only just bought it it was probably still registered to the old owner, hence when they ran a check would have come up different, i can see why they took it, but they should havnd it back for free

after hours and hours arguing with the police.they have decided they will cover the costs.
they tried to change the reason to y they took it. they said they did a pnc check and the vehicle came back without having insurance which is bollocks i got told by the first copper that it had been took because it looked suspicous. i said to the copper who said it got took for insurance reasons oh so they have started finger printing un insured cars now have they..
i explained to him that im covered to drive any vehicle i had to produce insurance before they would release the car for free..
