what is the best paint to use on them to get a nice glossy finish whithout it melting the paint?

if u wanna make it perfect then sand the drums down loads and get a nice smotth finish on them!!
then apply a few coats of hammerite all over it!!

Simple!
also make sure u have the gloss black and not the matt black!!

where do you get hammerite from and how much? i take it that you have to clean the drums and calipers with a metal brush to get the rust off first

yeah use a metal brush first then loads of sand paper!!

halfords have it ive used sum very high temrature red paint looks ok

yeah i used the high temp red from halfords aswell. shines quite a lot until the inevitable brake dust appears

Hammerite is around a fiver on the markets. Wire brushes are around £1. If you don't have time to go the market then B&Q, Taskers etc will have it.

hammerite'd drums... took flaking rust off with wire brush and gave a brisk sanding down then a good few coats:
