im purchasing this today

http://www.giant-bicycles.com/au/030.000.000/030.000.000.asp?year=2005&model=9853

with the optional hydraulic discs, tis a nice bike for very reasonable money. might end up transferring running gear over to my Kona frame though

You could go for Gian or Kona if you want to spend quite abit of money. Then again u can pick up a decent one with only front sus for a good price, just over your price range

http://www.giant-bicycles.com/uk/030.000.000/030.000.000.asp?year=2005&model=10151

Although lookign at the Giant bikes i would go for this

LIft your budget to £400-£450 and you should be able to pick up a Claud Butler Cape Wrath which comes out on top in every budget bike review.

Spezialised do some of the hardrock series down round the £300 mark.
