Is the wireless network MAC-restricted or WEP/WPA encrypted?
Is the laptop's wireless-card set up in network-mode rather than ad-hoc (computer-to-computer) mode?
Is the laptop's wireless card configured to automatically connect, and does it have the details configured for the wireless network you're connecting to?
Is the wireless network enabled on whatever you're connecting to (you'd be surprised how many times this fixed the issue in work, when I used to be on the phones)?
If the above doesn't help, give some more details, like which router you're trying to wirelessly connect to, screenshots (with any personally-identifiable details masked out) of the wireless-config pages on the laptop, and anything else relevant...

I have no encryption set on the network.
The laptop is set to ad-hoc and infrastructure.
Not sure how to do the last things you've said?
Also ive tried a third party wifi application called Boingo and it scans and doesnt find anything to connect to.
Any more help guys?
