probably an IRQ problem. find out make and model of the drives and reinstall the drivers. right click on My Computer, click Properties, select hardware tab, then click device manager. if drives have a yellow question mark next to them, its most liekly a driver problem.

Yes you do, although XP will normally have the drivers pre-installed. however, LG DVD drives are notoriously bad at forgetting what they are.

is there no manufacturer name on the front? regarding the device manager, ask it to roll-back driver, see what happens.

Have you had the lid off yet - this sounds like a physical problem with the wires.

An OS won't just lose drivers.

Also it should see IDE devices as your hard drive is probably IDE?

Could be a BIOS issue - could try flashing it?

make sure the jumper pins on the back of the drives are set right. One should be set to MASTER the other SLAVE.

You could always try to take one of the drives out (ensuring that the remaining drive is set to MASTER) to try and identify if one of the drives is knackered.

If it was me i'd work through it logically - testing each drive individually, testing different IDE cables etc etc

reepah that sounds a bit too extreme. if it was working before, there is most probably a work-around. flashing BIOS is not only tricky for novice's, but dangerous.

Are both drives connected by one wire?

If so its more likely to be the motherboard end that has come loose - both drives failed at the same time.

mike, the wide cable that connects the drives to the computer, are they both on the same cable, and also, is there anything else connected to them? like a floppy drive or hard drive?
