Welcome

The strips are just glued on so there are no holes although occasionally some people have found that the paint is a slightly different colour underneath because its not as faded, or the glue has worked its way in to the lacquer and discoloured it.

Doesn't always need paint - new stripes are not so expensive if decide to put them back on.

What colour is the car?

bad news, mine is a W reg (2000) and when i took the side strips off there was tiny little holes of missing paint. Can't see them from a few feet but if you look close you can see them forming the shape of the strip

Shoe polish is actually better as you would only need to do it once or twice a year

if you do choose to remove them. DO NOT use boiling water straight from a kettle. i did on one side and the next thing i have limescale down the side of my car, is impossible to remove have tried evrything.

pour onto a sponge then apply - suggest wearing rubber gloves!!
