Will keep an eye on this thread. I'm looking to take up golf, mainly because its all people at work talk about. They are always having tournaments too and getting free stuff from couriers like UPS and DHL for prizes.

i've only just started playing... not too bad at it and found that if you play regularly (once a week) you can pick it up quite quickly.
Very satisfying when you start getting bogeys or double bogeys
Don't do what my mate did and spend loads on an expensive set of clubs, he bought a nike set off ebay (for a good price admittedly) but they're too good for his level of play.
I bought most of mine individually from places like Lillywhites and Sports Soccer for about £7 each (in the sale down from around £30 each )
I'm going tomorrow morning, if I can get out of my bed

don't bother with books mate, you need to get on the driving range and practice hitting the ball straight.
Hit a few hundred balls and if you don't pick it up, get a lesson or two. They'll be able to tell you where you're going wrong with your swing and how you can fix it

Starting on a range is my plan of action.
Played a few par3 9 hole's before, sucked big time though. Could never lift the ball properly, always skimmed across the grass.

as with most things in life you get what you pay for. I don't know a huge deal about what clubs are best but I imagine your Dunlop and Donnay clubs will be good enough for what you want at the minute. Same as me really.
Like Nath says, once you've been to the range a few times get on a par 3 course to practice your chipping and iron shots. I can get round using only 3 clubs. 8 iron, pitcher and putter That's when you know you're using the clubs for what they're actually meant for.
Then progress onto driving and long distance. I'm not getting into that yet. I can hit a ball further with a 3 iron than my mates can with the driver and they're bigger than me. Proof that they're swing is crap because you shouldn't really have to put much effort into it. Let the club do the work so to speak

I Started playing about 18 months ago because I couldn't play rugby anymore after surgery on my knee and I love it. Bought my self a beginner set of McGregor MC501's for about £200 including a putter and a bag and they've been brilliant.
I've managed to get my Handicap down to 19 this year so i'm fancying changing to Srixon I-302 Irons and I've just bought myself a Mizuno MP-001 Driver which is the fucking daddy

Last par3 I did I gave up after 3 holes because I got pissed off
A mate at work who just won our Works tournament has offered to go down the range with me and give me some pointers, may take him up on that.

Wilson clubs are quite good. My mate has a set and he recommends them.
Every one of my mates shots skim the grass. All you're doing is hitting the ball at the bottom of the head of the club instead of the centre and not getting lift. You either need to bend your knees more, or not be afraid of whacking the ground with your club (quite common with new golfers - including me)

Sounds like me, I always fear of smashing the floor. I also try to hard apparently. Practice makes perfect Will keep me busy this summer thats for sure.

Trying to hit the ball hard is a common fault of all beginners, it's more about a smooth tempo rather than trying to smash the ball as hard as you can. It took me ages to realise this,

yep, trying too hard is a definite no no.
I used to take a few practice swings and catch the grass just right... then I'd step up and totally mess my shot up. Was embarassing.
For some reason just the fact that the ball was there put me off, especially when on the tee.
I need to get my driving sorted out as well when playing on a course. Can slug it 250 yards when at the range but when it comes to a course it just doesn't happen

Wilson clubs and donnay clubs, any kinds you get frm sports shops for a tenner are shit, ok for beginners but as soon as your on your way spend some money on a good set of clubs. If you get a lesson or two from a Pro he should be able to reccomend you when to buy a good set

exactly. Like i said before just let the club do the work, if you hit it sweet there's every chance of it going just as far.
