i currently have a gigabyte P4 titan GA-8SIMLH-P motherboard with 768mb ram, 40gb HD, ATi Radeon 9800 64mb (i think) graphics card and an intel celeron 2.4 CPU.

i dont want to spend loads of money, but i would quite like to run HL2, Far cry etc with a decent amount of detail without it slowing down.

I would spend some money on a new graphics card and new HDD if needed first

get yourself a Radeon 9800 Pro, can be had for little money these days and still cut the mustard

Might benefit from a processor upgrade though, Celeron's were always aimed at the more budget end of the market

yeh as dave says, just stick a 9800 pro in there, will only need the 128mb version, 256 isnt worth it IMO.

see how u go from there, but it should be fine.

i only run a 2.8 intel processor with 1GB of ram and i run most games on highest spec.

but my GFX card is a little over clocked

Its because Celerons are shit. Get a Pentium 4, Celeron 2.4 is equal to a Pentium 3 800mhz, (+little or no features), its utter shite.

P4 2.8

Thats because the processor handles all the values, and cos celerons are shit, you're gonna have trouble playing any demanding game.

I have a 256MB ATI Readon 9600 VIVO DVI graphics card which runs games nice and smoothly.
would not worry about HD space ( as you have 15G's Free ) CPU (Intel) would be next step and then maybe Ram.

i think its DDR, how do i find out?

will i have any compatibility problems with my motherboard? Is it just a case of swapping the CPUs over like a graphics card? can my blind monkey do it? whats your favorite colour?

To be honest amd outperform intel at gaming. If your mobo supports it i would go amd and get a amd 3000+ venice then overclock it! Its got the best core. But if not ignore what i said lol! If you can't the ditch the celeron and get yourself a p4

Well, ive never had a celeron in my PC, so im assuming (because it sits in the same socket) it should be fine. Its not hard, but it involves alot of careful handwork, not to mention if your statically charged, and you touch the processor, its fried.

You'll need a new heatsinc, and fan to go with the upgraded processor, and also heat disapating gel to put ontop of the chip itself (some heatsync's already have it at the bottom of the heatsync, but its best to be sure)

i guess if you have no computer knowledge, id get someone else to do it for you, but dont let them charge you, cos if you know what you're doing, its too simple.

And as for the ram, just get any diagnosing software such as Sandra, or Fresh Diagnose.

He cant put in an AMD because you need a Socket A slot for AMD processors. If you want an AMD adam, you'll have to get a motherboard that supports it.

EDIT: I called you dave
