Looking at upgrading one of my desktops as i'm bored Anyway, what the difference between the Pentium 4 and Athlon 64s?
Basically, my computer is used for web browsing, documents, programming and playing music but it has been known that i've spent 20 hours a day on a computer
Looking at least a 3 gig chip but would like to ge as high as possible. Have around 200 for the chip

You cant choose. If your board has a Slot A socket, you only can have AMD processors. Intels are better then AMD's, as AMD's run to the limit of their life constantly, and heat up 10x as fast, and 10x as much.
Pentiums are better for games anyway. Back in the day AMD were used mainly for CAD software and suchlike, but nowadays, Pentiums are equally as poweful. Never used a Athlon 64, but i heard theres no point having a 64bit processor unless your OS supports 64bit, or your processer will just run at the standard rate.

AMD64 = for gaming
P4 = for software (ie. photoshop and windows based programs)

Will be changing the board too. Think i'm gonna go for an Athlon 64 3700. But, i'm not getting until i'm paid in a week or so and therefore the prices may come down. It about time i upgraded my AMD Athlon 2000 chip, i've had it over 2 years

It all depends what you want it for basically at the moment AMD's are leading the market for the best gaming chip which is what i have just bought but anything else P4 as most AMD chips don't even go up to 3 gig.

clock speed dose not matter the fact that amd and intel are so close and amd are the best of the to for almost all aplications proves the fact. intel have shot them selves in the foot going for clock speed because it sells. but now they are getting left behind.

Id go AMD over Intel anyday.
Intel get high clock speeds, but what matters more is the clock cycles per second, which AMD win in that respect.
I have an AMD Athlon 64 3200+ and ive never had any complaints, combined with OCZ ram and an OCZ PSU its brilliant. The only let down for me is my Asus K8VSE mobo, was good at first but as i made the system more complex the mobo couldnt handle it, so im looking to change in the future.
