Driving it earlier. Heard like a rubbing noise. Thought it was the tyres rubbing on something inside the arch and was going to use some spacers to solve it.

So I thought... Minutes after doing 70 or something on very dark B-Roads. I was doing 50 round a long sweeping bend. Hear a massive bang and the car goes sideways. Hit the brakes hard and stopped at the side of the road. My mate gets out and shouts there's smoke coming from the wheel. I come round and it's pouring off. The metal cap of the drum brake had been blasted off taking the centre cap of my wheel with it . Took the wheel off, phoned my mate and decided the wheel bearings were fucked... Put the Alloy on, which is now scratched because it fell over. .

Decided to drive the thing home. Started it and got to about 20 mph when the car made a loud bang again from the same wheel. My mate who was following said the wheel was moving from side to side (On the back ). So I got him to drive it a little way up the road we had pulled into.. There I could see the wheel was moving from side to side I'm not happy.

Phoned my breakdown company and got them to recover me. The bloke was sound and told me what could have happened if it blew on said B-road earlier. Apparently the next stage was the wheel would have flew off . Got towed home. Whick i'm now pissed off about because the car can't go anywhere. Wish i'd left it there and got it recovered to my garage tomorrow.

Awwww Shit.

Did you not hear a nasty rumbling noise for a while before this? Usually a good sign a bearing is on the way out...

if you drove home on a fucked rear bearing like that you are also going to need a new rear stub axle

I had this happen to me and the wheel bearing didnt make any sort of noises like they usually do, it just went.
I was doing 65mph on a dual carriageway going round a corner and there was a loud bang like a shot gun and then I went sideways, managed to straighten the car up and come to a stop in one piece.
The wheel had completely seized and the bearing had welded itself to the stub axle Didnt cost much to get sorted, just called the AA and they towed me to a garage and was sorted by the end of the day

But it does happen.

It happened to me going past the local school to get onto the main road while all the kids were coming out and my car skidded and nearly jacknifed

I had this happen on the motorway just as I was coming on to it thankfully. the tyre never touches the arch on the passenger side normally but it suddenly did and the steering felt wierd. drove a little further down the motorway cause I was on my way to work which was another 5 mins away so i crawled to work and found the rear wheel to be running camber

Called the AA who promptly destroyed my bumper (they paid) and repaired the damage myself. quite intresting seeing a bearing welded to the stubby axle tho (for about 30 secs before you think shit i cant remove this)

Just going to dust off the BMX and go and look for my Centre Cap . Weird it's happened to a lot of people. Was it all on Corsas? Mechanic said they are prone to it...

Mine was on a Corsa 1.2 8v that I had before this and it happened for the reason that Greasemonkey said. My mate had tightened the castle nut up too tight. You been changing/checking/messing with your rear brakes recently?
