1) S1 or a S2, im guessing S2 as there are far more about, and alot less, IMo they are brillaint cars, not stunning as standard, but in tuned form they are even just sticking with the 1.6 cvh
2) a few
3) if you look for a good one, with as little rust as poss, check the boot hindges, the gap between the inner and outer roof skin where the sunfoof is as well as the egnrall places youd check, also check for smoke on revs and cold starting if poss

I've driven many escort rst's (have one in the workshop atm) and my opinion of them is pretty low.
Thats not to say i wouldnt buy one though
As standard they are poor. The brakes (particular the crappy abs system) and suspension are poor at best and generally very tired (they are old cars now).
Performance wise they arent up their with the best by no means. However they can be tuned cheap with simple boost upping chips etc.
All the examples here have had thousands chucked at them and they need it.
As said if buying one check the floor especially front foot wells. Rear sills inner and outer (remove the jacking point covers and have a look in there! And also the rear chassis rails. Pattern rails arent available so it starts to get expensive here.
Smoke wouldnt bother me your going to end up doing engine work anyway. Ignore thousands of receipts paperwork for a turbo a year ago is worth nothing if its been hammered ever since!
S1's fetch good money and are more desirable. My personal opinion is that as standard the fiesta turbo is a much better driving car but still nothing spectacular!

I've got one, she's like a beatiful woman, a pleasure to own; but expensive to run, a bit temperamantal; and a f*cking liability.
We get on quite well though.
There is a lot of sh*t out there however, so be prepared for a long search for a good one. Rust will be your arch nemesis (it is a Ford).
In the main they're pretty crap, XR3i with a small turbo bolted on.
That said, they're infinitely preferable to a Renault 5 Turbo or Uno Turbo.
If you have it prepped by a renowned tuning firm (or better still, it's already been done) and use the right bits, they can be very impressive though.
Better off with an old Sapph Cossie or early Imprezza Turbo or Nissan 200 or Sunny GTI-R unless you realy like them and are prepared for fairly regular gearbox builds, depending on power output.
They are a laugh to drive though, so if you decide to start hunting, good luck and I hope you find a good one.
BTW, jr posted pics of a very interesting Mercury grey example the other night, it looked very together and was only 5k.
Deffo worth a look
