OK This is a very basic guide to "Texas holdem"--- this is the most popular form of poker and is what you will see being played on t.v. Their are infinite different variations of poker.

Poker is about making the best 5 card hand possible. At all times playes have the option to fold(pay nothing into the hand and chuck your cards away), check (can only do this if it hasnt been raised- basically means you want to stay in the hand without raising)or raise(whatever you raise it must be matched by all other players or they can reraise you- if they fold you win that hand.).

Every one is dealt two cards -- they can look at these but no one else can see them.(at this stage a pair, or high cards or cards of the same suit is considered a good hand)

There is a round of betting based on these two cards.

then three community cards are dealt so that everone can see them.. this is called the flop. you must use these three cards together with your two cards to make the best 5 card hand possible.

then there is another round of betting.

a fourth community card is shown

another round of betting
]
the last community card is shown.

So in total ther is 5 community cards and 2 in your hand. whoever can make the best 5 card hand from this list wins......

royal flush-- ace,k,j,q,10 of the same suit
staright flush- five cards in numerical order of the same suit
four of a kind- e.g four kings
full house- eg 3 aces and 2 kings 0r 3 fours and 2 fives ect
flush- any 5 cards of the same suit
straight- any 5 cards of any suit in numerical order eg- 23456
3 of a kind
2 pair
1pair
high card

The betting moves around the players clockwise from the dealer. the dealer changes every hand and followes the same order as the betting--- this means that sometimes you will be first to bet and sometimes you will be last..... this obviously has a big bearing on the game.

This sounds very complicated but is actually easy just to start playing--- you can learn how to play the game in ten minutes --- then spend the rest of your life tring to perfect it.
