depends what camera you use - if you use a single CCD cam, then tbh the picture is slightly better over HI8 etc. If your using something like a cannon XL1S ie: 3CCD, then yea theres a huge improvement - just look at 28 Days. But obviously thats been touched up loads for DVD.

But then its all down to price - handy cam a few 100, XL1S/Sonys around the 2-8k range, DVD quality professional cams 40k - a few 100k

I had the understaning Mini DV had the potential of being mioles better than dvd if shot on the right equipment. Dvd is compressed after all.

Well I would go for mini DV simply for the small size of the cameras compared to the big and bulky 8mm's.

Also with most mini dv camcorders you can connect them to a pc using a firewire card and transfer the video over almost quality loss free, however you can only send video from the pc to the camcorder if it has DV-IN enabled (the reason for having this feature disabled is that if the camcorder can record from an external source the it is classed as a vcr and therefore subject to a higher import tax)

You can get good quality panasonic and JVC camcorders for around £300 these days. I paid over 1K 5 years ago when mini DV was new!

hmmm, mini DV is also compressed using DCT (similar to Mpeg2) and has a fixed bitrate of 25Mb/s (works out about 3.6megs a second), which is great, but like you say its all down to the right equipment - and you certainly need to go 3CCD for anything for DVD. Even then, i would opt for touch the film up during post-production.

But theres loads of variants of DV, like sonys DVCam, panasonics DVCPro - which all have there own take on it.

However, saying all that my mate recently got a sony handy cam (think it was a DCR-HC1000), cost him around 600 quid off the net and the picture is alot better than the old sony handycams - although its still far off DVD, but wasnt too bad for the cash

eitherway, the worse thing with DV cam is that its real-time transfer to your pc etc - so if you have an hours worth of footage then it will take an hour to transfer, which is abit cack, and thats the only reason i would opt for the hard-drive stuff.

just use something like premiere mate - i would opt for ver6 if you can get it, because 7, although has alot more features, i found it a pain to use.

Or you can get something like avid which the BBC use, or Final Cut etc

TNM go for any other major brand bar JVC and you can't go wrong done a lot of research on cameras over the last month or so and the amount of bad reviews on JVC video cameras is unbelieve.
