Are there many people on here with IT tech support type jobs?
I'm at Uni right now and I've got a interview for a 1 year placement as a "Trainee ICT Help Desk Officer" - would just like some opinions on the role of the job, what you like about it - what you don't etc
Also how much money are you on? (Obviously you don't have to answer that 1 ) Thanks for any help

It's for the GLA (Greater London Authority) I'd be working in City Hall.
I'll just copy and paste the stuff from the job description:
This placement will provide the opportunity to work in a wide range of IT areas including IT support, service delivery, systems research, installations and back office assistance.
1. Provide high quality assistance and support to the back office engineers in their role in maintaining and developing the network infrastructure.
2. Assist the Installations engineer with IT equipment moves and changes.
3. Assist the Telecommunications Engineer in implementing and installing telecom equipment.
4. Assist the ICT Helpdesk to provide support to users in making more effective use of desk top systems, products and services, investigating complex problem situations to diagnose underlying causes and helping users to recover or continue operation.
5. Support an inventory of equipment supported by the Help Desk together with logs of user details, problems and resolutions, for administration and planning purposes.

Your pay depends on:
a) age
b) experience
c) qualification
Lucky for me C doesnt apply to me
I'd think long and hard about doing Tech support, its a shitter of a job if you actually like computing.

I'm 19 right now. As this would only be a 1 year placement, then I'd be going back to Uni for my final year, the pay is £15,000 for 37hrs a week.
I just really like fixing things and playing around with buidling computers and stuff like that - whether or not it would be a novelty that would wear off after being there for a while remains to be seen - but then again you could say that about any job!
I guess if I do this at least it's only for a year and I can then decide from that if I like it or not

IT support is a horrible job. My mate does it at the moment at a hospital. He doesn't seem to hate it as much as i did.
15k a year aint too bad imo. And like you say it's only 1 year. IT support is normally a start to better things

lol I'm getting the impression that it's not exactly popular!? But - like you guys said, hopefully it could lead to bigger things as well. I'm sure there'd be plenty of other jobs there to move up into.
Is there anyone who enjoys it?

Sounds like you should be jumping off mountains and stuff TNM - you obviously live on the edge!
It's a good point though - Very rarely will you find someone who loves their job all the time. The people that do are the lucky ones i guess

I think I've got the ability to be able to move through promotions, I'm a fast learner and all that.. Where can moving through this career path get you? Head tea boy?! What would you be doing once you'd "reached the top", and what sort of money would you be on once you got there?

I work in engineering in the City, but do some 3rd line support too... Got mates that do 1st line support here (dealing with day to day login problems, etc, etc) who are pushing 40k a year. The managers are on much more.
I'd still recommend you went for more engineering/higher level support jobs as some of my mates wanna hang themselves after speaking to moron users all day

Things like "Why is my screen all black" when there's a power failure?!
Yea I could see why that would drive people to suicide!
I still think I'll go for it - stepping stone to better things hopefully

I started on IT support doing general login problems and people ringing up asking how to print and stuff
But I started knowing that I wouldn't be there for long talking to morons and me being on 12 K a year.
2 1/2 years later im on internal desk side support, building computers, servicing, building networks etc and started on 16 K with opportunities to get more £ and more jobs on offer.
Moneys ok but spend £0 on travel
